Containers

Remember that one of the #1 rules for organizing is that everything has a “home,” the place where it lives and is always returned to after use. When you are assigning all your belongings to their “home” don’t forget about the wonder of containers. Try to think of every item being in a container. Drawers count as a container in many cases, but there are desk organizers for small items like paper clips, rubber bands, etc. that fit in drawers. Also, there are drawer dividers for socks or jewelry. For shelves, you can buy shelf dividers to keep stacks of sweaters, pants, pajamas separate or in a linen closet to keep the different size sheets separate. There are baskets for bathroom supplies, games, toys, and CDs.

As you think and plan with containers it does a couple of things. One, your items in that basket or shelf shouldn’t overflow. When it does, it is time to sort through again. So plan on the right size container for each item. Two, it helps KEEP you organized. You know where each item goes and it is easy to find and put away.

There are many websites offering containers or you can just peruse a store and look for ideas and what suits your taste and your budget. They don’t need to be fancy – shoe boxes, baby food jars, canning jars also work. So think CONTAINER.
